The Tortoise, you know, carries his house on his back.	모두가 알다시피 거북이는 등에 집을 이고 다닙니다.
No matter how hard he tries, he cannot leave home.	거북이는 무슨 수를 써도 집을 떠날 수가 없지요.
They say that Jupiter punished him so, because he was such a lazy stay-at-home that he would not go to Jupiter's wedding, even when especially invited.	그것은 주피터(제우스) 신이 내린 벌이라고 알려져 있습니다. 주피터 신이 거북이를 결혼식에 초대했을 때, 거북이가 집에서 빈둥거리며 게으름을 피우느라 참석하지 못했기 때문이죠.
After many years, Tortoise began to wish he had gone to that wedding.	여러 해가 지나고 거북이는 비로소 그 결혼식에 갔으면 하고 후회했습니다.
When he saw how gaily the birds flew about and how the Hare and the Chipmunk and all the other animals ran nimbly by, always eager to see everything there was to be seen, the Tortoise felt very sad and discontented.	새는 어찌나 활기차게 날아다니고, 토끼와 다람쥐, 다른 모든 동물들은 어찌나 재빠르게 달려나가며, 보고싶은 것들을 마음껏 보려 다니는 것을 지켜보며 거북이는 슬프고 의기소침해졌습니다.
He wanted to see the world too, and there he was with a house on his back and little short legs that could hardly drag him along.	거북이도 세상을 보고 싶었습니다. 하지만 등 뒤의 집과 짧은 다리로는 거의 몸을 움직일 수 없었습니다.
One day he met a pair of Ducks and told them all his trouble.	어느날 거북이는 한 쌍의 오리를 만나 그의 고민을 털어놓았습니다.
"We can help you to see the world," said the Ducks.	"세상을 볼 수 있도록 우리가 도와줄게" 오리들이 말했습니다.
"Take hold of this stick with your teeth and we will carry you far up in the air where you can see the whole countryside."	"이 막대기를 꽉 물고있으면 우리가 이 동네가 전부 보일만한 하늘 높은 곳으로 데려다줄게"
"But keep quiet or you will be sorry."	"하지만 조용히 다물고 있지 않으면 좀 좋지 않은 일이 일어날수도 있어"
The Tortoise was very glad indeed.	거북이는 매우 기뻤습니다.
He seized the stick firmly with his teeth, the two Ducks took hold of it one at each end, and away they sailed up toward the clouds.	거북이는 막대기를 꽉 물었고, 두 오리는 막대기 양 끝을 잡고 구름 사이로 날아올랐습니다.
Just then a Crow flew by.	그때, 갑자기 까마귀 한마리가 스쳐 날아갔습니다.
He was very much astonished at the strange sight and cried:	까마귀는 생전 처음 보는 광경에 깜짝 놀라 소리쳤습니다.
"This must surely be the King of Tortoises!"	"이건 분명 거북이들의 왕일거야!"
"Why certainly——" began the Tortoise.	"그럼 당연히~" 거북이가 말했습니다.
But as he opened his mouth to say these foolish words he lost his hold on the stick, and down he fell to the ground, where he was dashed to pieces on a rock.	하지만 거북이가 이 멍청한 소리를 하려고 입을 열자 물고있던 막대기를 놓치고 말았습니다. 거북이는 그대로 바위로 추락해서 온 몸이 산산조각 나고 말았습니다.
